Shire Horse

The largest horse in recorded history was probably a Shire named Mammoth (also known as Sampson), born in 1848. He stood 21.2 1⁄4 hands (86.25 inches, 219 cm)

The Shire has a great capacity for weight-pulling.

Farmers saw the Shire as a workhorse in every sense of the word. They would take the horses out to plow the fields, haul equipment, and take care of other farm work.

Shire horses come in all different colors,

Horses sleep standing up! They sleep laying down too, but only for short periods.

Horses in the wild live in small herds, and domestic horses feel more comfortable if they have companions too.

The standard measurement for determining the height of a horse is called a hand.
